On February 9, 1981 17 year old Vivian Wells entered K.C. Regional Hospital in Kansas City Missouri.Kansas City is always cold in February, but this year was exceptional. There was nearly 2 feet of snow outside and 6 more inches were predicted within a 24 hour time frame. As she entered she dusted the snow from her coat and walked to the front desk.Vivian Wells was not alone as she walked down the hallway she was 9 months pregnant and was due any day. There was an old lady sitting at the front desk with apparently nothing to do because she was working on the Sunday Star's crossword puzzle.Even with the Hospital in a seemingly catatonic state, the Front desk worker gave Vivian a card with a number on it and told her to take a seat and that she would be helped shortly.
There were only 3 other people waiting in the lobby. One old man sitting in the corner mumbling to himself, presumably homeless by the way he was dressed. And a woman probably in her mid 20s with a sick little boy sleeping in her lap.Vivian sat patiently With what seemed to be the world on her shoulders trying to sort out her thoughts about what to do next.At 17 she was very young and did not know how she got were she presently was.As she sat her mind wandered. The Hospital was a very ugly place. The smells that floated in the air were a mix of urine, vomit, and strong cleaning chemicals the chemicals did not mask the first two smells just mixed with them to form a whole new nauseating smell that can only be found in hospitals. With the 70s not far gone the lobby colors were as equally unsettling as the smell. The floor was a sea/lime green with blue and white specks and the walls were a goldenrod color with tan trim.It seemed as if the hospital was an unsanitary place were people would come to get sick not well.
Vivian, lost in her thoughts, did not hear the front desk attendant call her number.Miss Wells, she heard someone shout waking her from her trance like sate, the doctor will see you now.Vivian looked around the room the old man and the mother and boy were gone she looked at the clock and realized she had been waiting for over an hour.Time had passed so fast that she did not have time to sort out what she had wanted to.She got out of her chair gave the piece of paper with the number on it to the elderly front desk attendant who had resumed her crossword puzzle, and walked down the hall.
